Problem reported:

User1 reported receiving a blank email from User2.

Observations:

The blank email was a read receipt for an email originally sent by User1 to User2. The email had the subject "Read: [Primary Subject of Mail]" and appeared to be from User2, but was actually sent by the server automailer ID. This is a system-generated notification indicating that User2 has read the email.

Analysis:

Check the headers of the email. Confirm the From and Envelop From addresses. The envelop from will be the servers default ID.

With this info you will get to know that the email is about read notification.

  • Inform User1 that this is a standard read receipt notification and not an actual blank email.
  • Explain that such notifications are automatically generated when the recipient (User2) has the read receipt feature enabled.
  • If User1 does not want to receive read receipts, they can disable this feature in their email settings.

    For Outlook:

Go to File → Options → Mail → Tracking

Uncheck "Request a Read Receipt for all sent messages"

Conclusion:

This is not a technical issue but a standard read receipt notification. Users can manage their settings to control how these receipts are sent or received.
